It Started With One Question

A note from Janice, our founder.

It started with one question: what is this new hair?

Something had changed, and I didn't understand why. My hair wasn't behaving like mine anymore — and when I went looking for answers, I found a lot of products, but no one really explaining what was happening or what to do about it. Everything on the shelf seemed built for someone in her twenties, or quietly apologetic, as if this stage of life were something to hide.

So I started looking for answers. I read the research. I learned what estrogen actually does for hair and scalp, and why this season changes things the way it does. I experimented — far more than I'd like to admit — until the pieces started fitting together into something that actually worked. A system, not a shelf of single products hoping one of them helped.

That system became Esther & Ruth.

We take our name, and the name of every product in the line, from women whose stories are about transition, renewal, and staying rooted while everything around them changes. That's the emotional territory of this season, and it's the spirit I wanted the brand to carry: New Season, Same Roots.

I didn't build this to make anyone feel younger. I built it for the women living through this change — not around it. Because the truth I kept coming back to is a simple one, and it's the promise underneath everything we make:

Your hair changed. You don't have to figure it out alone.
