The Four-Step Routine, Explained

Caring for changing hair shouldn't become another thing to manage. The Esther & Ruth system is built around four simple moves that follow the natural rhythm of a wash day and the days in between: cleanse, condition, treat, support.

1. Cleanse

Start fresh without stripping the scalp that supports everything else. Perimenopausal hair tends to run drier, so harsh, high-sulfate cleansers do more harm than good. A gentle, sulfate-free wash cleans without leaving your scalp tight or your ends parched.

In the system: The Hannah, our clarify-and-strengthen shampoo. On weeks when hard water has left hair dull, The Miriam pre-shampoo treatment lifts mineral buildup first.

2. Condition

Bring softness back where your hair needs it most. As estrogen declines, your hair produces fewer of the barrier lipids that keep it supple. Conditioning replaces some of what's been lost, so hair feels like itself again.

In the system: The Kiki, our hydrating conditioner, formulated with ceramides and hyaluronic acid to soften without weighing hair down.

3. Treat

Give changing strands a little more of what they're asking for. This is the step that addresses the root — literally. A daily scalp tonic and a nightly serum are where the density-supporting actives do their patient work.

In the system: The Sarah scalp tonic each morning, The Elizabeth serum at night. Both support the appearance of fuller, healthier-looking hair over time.

4. Support

Keep the routine simple enough to actually stay with, week after week. Support also comes from within — a daily supplement rounds out the topical routine.

In the system: The Naomi capsule, taken daily.

A note on patience

Hair grows on its own timeline, not ours. The earliest changes — less shedding, a better-feeling scalp — often show up around eight to twelve weeks. Visible density changes take longer, closer to six months, because that's simply how the hair growth cycle works. Consistency matters more than intensity. This is a routine to settle into, not a sprint.

Not sure where to start? The Starter Kit gathers all seven products into one complete routine.
