03 — The Science

The essentials no single product delivers.

Every active is chosen for a specific perimenopausal mechanism — falling estrogen, rising DHT sensitivity, slower follicle cycling, thinning scalp microcirculation. No single legacy product combines all of these at clinical dose. That is the gap Esther & Ruth is built to close.

Ingestible Actives
Pumpkin Seed Oil · 400mg
+40% hair count over 24 weeks.

A 2014 randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 76 adults with pattern hair loss found 400mg of pumpkin seed oil daily increased hair count by 40% over 24 weeks vs. 10% in placebo. Beta-sitosterol is a natural 5-α-reductase inhibitor — it blunts the DHT surge that drives perimenopausal thinning at the crown and part line. Named honestly: the pivotal trial was in men. We use it because the DHT mechanism is directly relevant to hormonally-driven thinning in women, not because it has been proven in this exact life stage.

Saw Palmetto · 320mg
~30% drop in serum DHT.

A 2020 systematic review of clinical trials on Serenoa repens (320mg standardised extract) reported meaningful reductions in serum DHT and improvements in hair growth. Same 5-α-reductase pathway as pumpkin seed oil — a second DHT lever, so we are not relying on a single mechanism.

Topical Actives
Follicle Growth & Activation
Caffeine
Counters testosterone-induced follicle suppression in vitro.

Penetrates the follicle within ~2 minutes of scalp application and remains detectable at the root for around 24 hours. Offsets the growth-suppressing effect of testosterone and extends the anagen (growth) phase — the phase that shortens as estrogen falls.

Redensyl®
+9% hair growth vs. placebo (clinical, 84 days).

A dihydroquercetin-glucoside and EGCG₂ complex from Givaudan/Induchem that reactivates outer root sheath follicle stem cells (ORSc). In an 84-day human trial, it outperformed 1% minoxidil on hair-growth measures — waking follicles that have slipped into resting phase.

AnaGain™ (Pea Sprout)
+78% anagen / −39% telogen ratio shift.

Mibelle Biochemistry's organic pea-sprout extract nudges follicles out of telogen (shedding) and back into anagen (growth). Directly addresses the “sudden shedding” complaint women name most in perimenopause.

DHT Defence & Follicle Anchoring
Procapil®
Anti-DHT and follicle-anchoring peptide complex.

Croda's Procapil pairs a biotinyl-GHK peptide with apigenin and oleanolic acid. Protects the follicle from androgen attack and reinforces the anchoring proteins around the bulb that loosen as estrogen drops.

Capixyl™
+13% anagen / −29% catagen over 4 months.

A biomimetic acetyl tetrapeptide-3 plus red clover isoflavone (biochanin A). The red clover component is a phytoestrogen — a mild, plant-based echo of the estrogen the scalp is losing — while the peptide inhibits 5-α-reductase locally at the follicle.

Scalp Barrier & Fibre Strength
Niacinamide (B3)
Improves scalp barrier & microcirculation.

Restores the lipid barrier and blood flow to the scalp — both quietly compromised as estrogen drops — so follicles receive more oxygen and nutrients.

Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)
Up to 10% increase in fibre thickness.

A humectant that thickens and elasticises each strand — critical when perimenopausal hair is losing diameter and snap-back.

Baicapil™
+13% new hair, −18% shedding in 3 months.

A triple botanical of Baicalin, Soy and Wheat sprout extracts from Provital. Independently trialled on the mid-life shedding pattern — density and shedding reduction, not just perceived thickness.

Diaminopyrimidine Oxide
Minoxidil-like vasodilation, without the side-effect profile.

The molecule L'Oréal originally marketed as “Aminexil.” Opens scalp microvessels and prolongs anagen — the clean-label answer for women who can't tolerate, or won't start, minoxidil during perimenopause.

Zinc PCA
Sebum-balancing scalp mineral.

Balances the sebum shifts that come with hormonal change and calms an easily-irritated scalp — the surface layer that lets everything else work.

03 — The Oils

Castor, coconut, jojoba, argan — and why each one earns its place.

The Abigail mask, The Lydia face oil, and The Christina lightweight hair oil are built from cold-pressed plant oils with published human data on skin, hair and barrier function. Nothing here is decorative.

Plant Oils
Castor Oil (Ricinus Communis)
Ricinoleic acid — scalp-conditioning and moisture-sealing.

Roughly 90% ricinoleic acid, an unusual C18 hydroxy fatty acid with documented anti-inflammatory activity. The emollient backbone of The Abigail mask and The Lydia face oil: it seals moisture into a scalp drying out as sebum drops, and it carries frankincense and myrrh aromatics through the skin barrier at a controlled rate. Named honestly: the viral “castor oil regrows hair” claims are anecdotal, not clinically established — we use castor for verified emollient and barrier work, not as a growth active.

Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera)
Reduces protein loss from the hair shaft.

One of the few oils actually shown to penetrate the hair shaft rather than sit on top of it. Lauric acid's short chain and polarity let it enter the cortex and reduce protein loss during washing. The foundation of The Abigail mask.

Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis)
The plant oil closest to human sebum.

Chemically a liquid wax, not a triglyceride — the nearest plant analogue to the sebum women stop producing as they age. Added deliberately to The Christina for exactly that reason.

Argan Oil (Argania Spinosa)
Improves skin elasticity in post-menopausal women.

A randomised trial in post-menopausal women found daily argan oil (dietary + topical) significantly improved skin elasticity over 60 days. The hero oil of The Christina and a shine-and-seal layer in The JoAnne red-vibrancy shampoo.

Rosehip Seed Oil (Rosa Canina)
High linoleic acid + retinoic acid precursors.

Rich in linoleic acid and natural vitamin A precursors — supports skin texture and tone on facial skin that is thinning and losing collagen. The active side of The Lydia face oil.

Frankincense & Myrrh
Cosmetically-permitted aromatics with soothing history.

Used at controlled dilution (well under 1% combined) in The Lydia and The Christina. Both are IFRA-permitted for leave-on cosmetic use at these levels. We deliberately do not add cinnamon, cassia or calamus from the Exodus 30 anointing recipe — all three are documented sensitisers.

04 — What We Left Out

Ingredients standard hair care still uses that are wrong for this life stage.

Half of designing for perimenopause is subtraction. Many ingredients in mainstream shampoos, detanglers and heat sprays are legal, common, and specifically the wrong call for a woman whose scalp is drier, whose hair is more porous and finer, and whose endocrine system is already under strain. Here is what we refuse to formulate with, and why.

Removed From Every Formula
Cyclic Silicones — D4 & D5
EU-flagged endocrine disruptors. Removed.

D4 is classified in the EU as a Category 2 reproductive toxicant and PBT substance; D5 is vPvB and restricted in leave-on personal care. Adding endocrine-disruption load to an already estrogen-declining system is exactly the wrong direction. Replaced across The Peyton, The Deborah and The Christina with linear dimethicone, squalane or caprylyl methicone.

Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial)
EU-banned fragrance allergen. Removed.

Classified CMR Category 1B and banned from cosmetics in the EU as of March 2022. Still legal in several non-EU markets and appears in mainstream detanglers — including the reference product Deborah is benchmarked against. We remove it.

Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde (Lyral)
EU-banned contact allergen. Removed.

One of the most documented fragrance sensitisers in dermatology literature. Banned from cosmetics in the EU since 2021. Poor fit for the more reactive scalp and skin common in perimenopause.

Denatured / SD Alcohol 40-B
Compounds dryness. Removed from every leave-on.

Standard in mainstream scalp tonics and detanglers. Drying alcohols evaporate quickly and leave the barrier flashier and drier — the opposite of what a perimenopausal scalp needs. Our tonic and detangler use aloe, glycerin and panthenol as the base instead.

Sulfates (SLS / SLES) in Color-Treated Hair
Strip color and lift the cuticle. Removed.

Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate cleanse aggressively enough to lift the cuticle and accelerate color washout — a specific problem when hair is already more porous. The JoAnne and The Shiah use sulfate-free surfactant bases only.

Prescription Ketoconazole 2%
Not appropriate for a private-label clean-beauty brand.

Ketoconazole 2% is prescription-only in the US. The Hannah uses either the 1% OTC monograph route or a cosmetic-grade alternative (piroctone olamine) so the product stays honest about what it is and does not require a doctor to prescribe.

05 — The System

Four pillars, one routine.

Each product carries specific actives, but the routine is engineered around four pillars — because no single ingredient does all four jobs.

Pillar 01
DHT Defence

The Naomi (pumpkin seed oil + saw palmetto) blunts the androgen surge internally. Capixyl and Procapil add topical DHT modulation at the follicle.

Pillar 02
Follicle Activation

Caffeine, Redensyl and AnaGain wake dormant follicles and lengthen the growth phase.

Pillar 03
Fibre Strength

Panthenol, hydrolyzed keratin and Baicapil rebuild the diameter and elasticity perimenopausal hair loses. Coconut and castor lock the fibre in from the outside.

Pillar 04
Scalp Health

Niacinamide, Zinc PCA and diaminopyrimidine oxide restore the barrier, microcirculation and follicle anchoring the scalp needs to grow anything at all.
